For the health conscious, processed white sugar can be a difficult culprit to avoid. Luckily, stevia, raw honey, xylitol, monk fruit, and coconut sugar offer the same sweetening power without the guilt.
Stevia, a sweetener extracted from the stevia plant, is 15 times sweeter than sugar yet has six times fewer calories than white sugar. For baking, substitute a cup of sugar with half a teaspoon of stevia powder.
Packed with antioxidants, raw honey makes a for an excellent sweetener substitute. One cup of granulated sugar equals one-third cup of raw honey. Honey's unique taste is sure to elevate a baked good to a new level!
At the low glycemic index of seven, xylitol is an excellent sweetener alternative for those who must carefully monitor sugar intake. When cooking, you can swap out half a cup of sugar for half a cup of xylitol. Sprinkling a teaspoon of xylitol on grapefruit adds a pleasant hint of sweetness. As a bonus, xylitol is also known to be healthy for your teeth!
With zero calories, the lesser-known monk fruit also makes for an excellent sweetener alternative. Add one-fourth teaspoon into a cup of peppermint tea for a soothing, healthy treat. When cooking with monk fruit as a sugar substitute, cut the amount of sugar called for by the recipe in half and use that much monk fruit extract instead. It's much sweeter than sugar, so less is required.
Though technically still sugar, coconut sugar is healthier than white cane sugar as it retains some nutrients, like potassium, found in the coconut palm. For baking and cooking, replace processed white sugar at a 1:1 ratio with coconut sugar.
